Aspects describe the geometric angles between planets in a birth chart. These angular relationships determine whether planetary energies cooperate, clash, or create dynamic tension in your psychological makeup.

The Five Major Aspects

A conjunction (0°) merges two planetary energies into a single force. The result depends entirely on which planets are involved. A Sun-Jupiter conjunction amplifies confidence, while a Mars-Saturn conjunction creates tension between action and restraint.

A trine (120°) connects planets in the same element, creating natural talent and effortless flow. A sextile (60°) offers similar harmony but requires conscious effort to activate.

A square (90°) generates friction that demands resolution. Squares are the engine of personal growth. People with many squares in their chart tend to achieve more because the internal tension pushes them to act.

An opposition (180°) places two planets at maximum distance, creating a seesaw dynamic. The challenge is integration, learning to honor both sides rather than swinging between extremes.

Hard vs Soft Aspects

Traditional astrology labels squares and oppositions as "hard" and trines and sextiles as "soft." Psychological astrology views this differently. Hard aspects drive development, while soft aspects indicate areas of ease that may go undeveloped without intention.
